Zig Zag Farm Winter CSA Update

Its already February and we’re nearing the end of our 10 week winter CSA. Here are a few things I’ve been grateful for during this strange winter season:

  • Even if its just for a few minutes while standing outside with masks, I love seeing friends and neighbors at the bi-weekly CSA deliveries.
  • Everyone, including kids, seem to love sweet winter carrots. I’m going to plant double next year!
  • I built a new hoophouse! It will help extend my winter production and increase the reliability of summer harvests.
  • My favorite time to harvest fresh lettuce, kale and arugula is when its snowing outside and the hoophouse or row covers provide just enough protection for the sweetest and tenderest greens of the year.
  • I searched all sorts of seeds providers, ordered new seeds, and am planning to scale up for the spring season.

The Zig-Zag Farm CSA

After several years of small-scale production, I’m launching a pilot version of a weekly share from the ‘zig-zag farm’ CSA (community supported agriculture). It will start small, and I’ll be working with several other friends to provide more diversity beyond my veggie production.

Each week I’ll put together a selection of $10 worth of greens, veggies, eggs, and kombucha. Everything is grown or produced locally, among friends, ‘beyond organic’, etc. etc. The current goal is to cover our costs and share the harvest.

This week will include:

  • A dozen eggs
  • A liter of kombucha
  • 8 oz watercress (see description of this superfood here)
  • 1 bunch of baby carrots (from thinning out the main crop)
  • 1 butternut squash
  • 1 head of garlic

Just for comparison, this would cost you ~$16.59 based on comparable Wegmans prices.

I’m looking for any neighbors in the Brentwood / Mt. Rainier / Hyattsville area who would like to participate in this CSA on a weekly basis. If I have extras, I’ll send a weekly email describing the goods for anyone that’s interested in something less than a weekly share. Please respond via email if you’re interested in either option and I’ll keep you informed of what’s coming each week.

You can opt for pick-up at my place or delivery on Friday/Saturday.

You can pay by cash, check or an electronic payment service of your choice.

Interested? Just send me an email. First come first served 😊. Feel free to forward this to anyone else you think may be interested.
